What is Tafheem?
An authentic Islamic education, built for Muslim youth in America
The Tafheem Program is a full-time Islamic education program operated by the American Imams Academy in Sachse, Texas. It was created to revive an authentic model of Islamic education — inspired by the methodology of Al-Azhar — and make it practical, structured, and engaging for Muslim youth growing up in North America.
Tafheem — understanding in Arabic — is exactly what we teach for. Students don't just memorize; they learn to understand the Qur'an directly through Arabic, to think within each Islamic science, and to turn knowledge into worship, character, and service. Our guiding principle is simple: Knowledge and Action.
The program is open to boys and girls in grades 6–10 — families who want their children rooted in the Qur'an, confident in their identity, and prepared to lead their communities.

A real school rhythm, built around the Qur'an
Tafheem follows a two-semester academic year divided into six themed units, with every subject moving through the same progression — from foundations to leadership and legacy.

🗓️ The Academic Year
- 1Two semesters, six units. Each 6-week unit has a theme — from Knowing Allah to Hereafter, Leadership & Legacy — and all four Islamic sciences teach toward it together.
- 2Each science, twice weekly. Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah, and Tafsir each meet twice per week — 12 lessons per unit, 72 lessons per subject per year.
- 3Friday is different. A dedicated review & leadership day: comprehensive Qur'an review, individual assessment, and Life Lessons & Leadership.
- 4Real assessment. Unit assessments, oral evaluations, Qur'an and Arabic evaluations, character evaluation, and parent conferences each semester.
- 5Year 1 Qur'an benchmark. A minimum of Juz 'Amma and Juz Tabarak mastered with tajweed — individual tracks may go further.

Tafheem is built as a five-year institution modeled on Al-Azhar's preparatory institutes. Students advance year by year — with promotion earned through written and oral examinations.
Ta'sīs — Foundation Year 1 · Now Enrolling
Students learn what Islamic knowledge is and how to be a student of it: the four core sciences, daily Arabic, and heavy Qur'an time build identity, adab, and study habits.
Benchmark: Juz 'Amma + Juz TabarakBinā' — Building Year 2
The student becomes a true tālib 'ilm: Hadith begins with the 40 Nawawi, and Arabic deepens into grammar (Nahw) and morphology (Sarf) with a first classical text.

How to read these maps
Year → Semester → Unit → Lesson
Every Tafheem curriculum is built on the same skeleton, so a parent who learns to read one subject can read all seven. Six units fill a year. Six weeks fill a unit. Twelve lessons fill a unit — ten teaching lessons, one review, one assessment.
One question
Each year is framed by a single question the student should be able to answer by May, in his own words and with evidence.
Three units
Eighteen weeks, three units. Semester One builds the ground; Semester Two applies it and closes with the year's capstone.
Six weeks
Each unit names what a student can do by the end of it — not what was covered, but what he can now perform, explain, or defend.
One idea
Ten teaching lessons, one review, one assessment. Objectives, a practical outcome, an activity, and a way to check it.
Standards of Record
The rules every lesson is written under
These are not aspirations. They are the conditions a lesson has to meet before it is allowed into a Tafheem classroom.
One register, named openly
Creed is taught in the Ash'ari–Maturidi articulation of Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, because that is the register of the primary texts. Fiqh is Hanafi throughout — in its rulings, its terminology, and its ladder of obligation.
The relied-upon position comes first
The mu'tamad position is named first. A valid secondary opinion inside the school is named as such. A position from another school is named by that school and never quietly blended in.
No lesson issues a fatwa
Every lesson teaches the program's established position and names the point at which an individual case goes to a qualified scholar. Teachers present the program's position, not their own.
Nothing is invented
No quotation, reference, Arabic text, or ruling enters a lesson unless it has been verified in a published source. Where a claim cannot be sourced, it does not appear.
Difference is taught, not hidden
Where sincere scholars differ, students learn to state a view its own holders would accept before answering it. Adab al-ikhtilaf is a taught skill, not a disclaimer at the end of a slide.
Sensitive material has a protocol
Certain lessons require a written teacher script, scholar sign-off, and advance communication to parents before delivery. They are marked in the curriculum and are never improvised.
Spiral, never repeat
Around ten anchor themes return in every subject every year at greater depth. A returning topic is written as a deeper reading, and the curriculum says so explicitly.
Assessment rises with the student
Every unit closes with a review and an assessment. Every year closes with a named capstone that grows in demand — from a written portfolio in Year 1 to a researched paper defended before a panel in Year 4.
Adab is structural
Reverence toward the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions, and the scholars is built into the sequence itself — taught before contested material is ever narrated, not attached to it afterwards.

No prior hifz level is assumed — a placement assessment helps us meet every student where they are.
